In my work as a Root Cause Holistic Practitioner, I have encountered many clients who are seeking, what they commonly refer to as, “Healing”, or “Reset” or “Recharge”. Whatever the term used, they're usually looking for a "Major Shift", and quite often they have already tried a variety of traditional methods, such as, therapy, medication, hypnosis, self medicating, life coaching, or denial.

A common theme, that we all experience is Loss. Everyone goes through loss at some point and loss at any degree can feel traumatic, whether it’s the loss of your keys when you’re late (a minor trauma), or the loss of your loved one (a major trauma). However, the emotions that get trapped from the minor traumas that are not processed, tend to reoccur in never ending cycles and become more and more traumatic by small triggers and can violently explode when a major trauma occurs.

So here are the 3 common mistakes that I’ve found, and some practical ways to activate rapid change.

Number 3 - The Rinse and Repeat Cycle

I encounter people, all the time, who are still reacting to situations that occurred many weeks, months or even years ago. They have the video playing on auto repeat. They allow their subconscious mind to keep reliving the same experiences over and over. They focus on the past trauma and allow it to create their present and future reality.

Becoming aware of the cycle and asking yourself if you still need to be guarding yourself from the pain of long ago, or can you forgive “them” or yourself and allow yourself to make the present moment one of creation of your wonderful future. This simple, but difficult process can help to create the “Shift”.

Number 2 - Burying your thoughts

It takes some strength and patience to process your emotions, when living through trauma. Oftentimes we want to suppress the feeling so that we can avoid the pain involved with letting it go. However, in dealing with my own pattern of suppression, I have seen how much harder it can be to move into a place to process those suppressed emotions after you have buried them so deeply. These unprocessed emotions leak out through anger, self hatred, shame, guilt, etc. These suppressed emotions and the leaks they cause will manifest in physical issues, like disease, addiction, anxiety, depression, etc.

Learning how to identify healthy ways to process emotional trauma early can also become a habit that replaces the habit of suppressing your emotions.

Here is the Number 1, most common mistake that I have found…  Lack of Self Love

When processing our emotional trauma, it is common to feel hurt, ashamed, guilty, angry, victimized, unloved, etc. We tend to process what we perceive that others do to us and what we do to them as unforgivable or irreconcilable. We feel like there is no way to remedy this and we don’t want to forgive them or ourselves. The truth is, we often have a harder time forgiving ourselves than we do forgiving others. Forgiveness is not condoning any action or inaction, but understanding that there is never any healing in holding on to a negative past experience, especially one where you hold a grudge or feel deeply ashamed of.

The ongoing practice of Self Love and Self Care, as well as, Self Forgiveness, Forgiving of Others and Gratitude, are foundational to the emotional and metaphysical healing process.

Allowing yourself to be willing to forgive, even if you cannot or do not know how to forgive, will allow the forgiveness to gently fill your life and lift that burden that you have been carrying for so long.

There are so many more mistakes that we commonly make due to lack of understanding, cultural standards and societal conditioning, but there are just as many ways to make the adjustment at the root of the situation to create better mindful, physical and emotional health in your life.
